As a reminder,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/notifications.google.com\/g\/p\/AD-FnEzkBGjYQgWPDNuwKvM9sFWOyicgBGzUb4af4XnwvGQMVf9E6CDb1_eafV_B-cJE7G-85jv4oIYNERIiiaqzgbNnKcs8X7zXJN7eJUiDim4h3oDhMEfDnYBI1A6swo-s3lDJJNEuU90pMwZ3HQSfjuCG4YHvPxUpHRerwgGIfvqNDlvWps4akWQQDQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the \u201cChat preferred\u201d setting was launched last year in the Google Workspace Admin console<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After June 1, 2021, we will upgrade any \u201cChat and classic Hangouts\u201d setting users in your domain to \u201cChat preferred.\u201d The \u201cChat and classic Hangouts\u201d setting will be removed unless you opt out of the upgrade.&nbsp;<strong>Users who already have \u201cChat only,\u201d \u201cChat preferred,\u201d or \u201cClassic only\u201d selected, or users who have both services turned off, won\u2019t be affected<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What does this mean for my organization?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Google Chat will replace classic Hangouts as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/notifications.google.com\/g\/p\/AD-FnEwqugfDoFQnH5qwrTv7JVkwfGqAgkNqG3lWvFFurAyNAaxjUkPuOygiGt-PuiujrSyW5ENfvPVHxHxNRS9FVJPQsIdVSTBmJz0h4xLSXMYF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">default chat application for your affected users<\/a>. This automatic upgrade will start rolling out on&nbsp;<strong>June 1, 2021,<\/strong>&nbsp;and may take up to 2 weeks to complete.&nbsp;<strong>The \u201cChat and classic Hangouts\u201d setting will later be removed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What do I need to do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>If you don\u2019t have users in your domain with the \u201cChat and classic Hangouts\u201d service setting selected,&nbsp;<strong>no action is required on your part<\/strong>.<\/li><li>If users in your domain have the \u201cChat and classic Hangouts\u201d service setting selected, you have the following options:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>If you\u2019d like to choose the date to upgrade all your users to \u201cChat preferred,\u201d you should select the \u201cChat preferred\u201d setting in the Service settings tab on your desired date before June 1, 2021, by taking the following steps:From the Admin console Home page,&nbsp;<strong>go to&nbsp;<\/strong>Apps &gt; Google Workspace &gt; Google Chat and classic Hangouts.<ul><li><strong>Click<\/strong>&nbsp;Service Status.<\/li><li>You can choose to apply this setting to your entire organization or to selected organizational units only.&nbsp;<strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;We recommend you upgrade everyone at the same time to mitigate potential issues related to splitting capabilities across your network.<\/li><li><strong>Select<\/strong>&nbsp;Chat preferred.<\/li><li><strong>Click<\/strong>&nbsp;Save.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>If you aren\u2019t ready to migrate your domain to \u201cChat preferred\u201d by June 1, 2021, and would like to preserve your current service settings, you can opt out from the Admin Console by taking the following steps:Sign into your Admin account.<ul><li>Go to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/notifications.google.com\/g\/p\/AD-FnEwEstX5-MJhpLa7F3zlaCUXr7MtPhMTYaBm0LkhtjmLOlaYGA5cNiKI9kXaQp3Evw00QceavGxYefV4Y6rO-kqkyG3fMRvEGbfZ5TCTBqQW3SoQLSprcs8okXza1aQDbBQe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/admin.google.com\/ac\/apps\/gmail\/migrationtochatsettings<\/a><\/li><li><strong>Select<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cDon\u2019t migrate to Chat preferred as part of this migration opt out launch\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Click&nbsp;<\/strong>Save.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t take any action,&nbsp;<strong>all users in your organization who have the \u201cChat and classic Hangouts\u201d setting selected will be automatically upgraded to \u201cChat preferred\u201d over the course of 2 weeks<\/strong>. The \u201cChat and classic Hangouts\u201d setting will also be hidden and no longer accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Additional details<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Users in your domain with the \u201cChat preferred\u201d or \u201cChat only\u201d setting selected will also have the \u201cChat and classic Hangouts\u201d setting removed.<\/li><li>Conversation History: With the exception of a few special cases, messages sent in classic Hangouts 1:1 and group conversations will be available in Chat.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/notifications.google.com\/g\/p\/AD-FnExAELnrTTDBQz0dPRxZIGVw6PDlaocmMjRY2qMVHh1fXeNst1QyxI7bCnNlAgWXVyYgDC-HM0oP6xGbJwC0PJkbwTEXp972dFgOZbZF2pgE6A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about Chat and classic Hangouts interoperability<\/a>.<\/li><li>Direct calling: Chat doesn\u2019t yet support direct calling in the same way as classic Hangouts.
